ON THE ROAD
ARTICLE BY ROBERT HARRIS

The respect and gratitude shown me and the Veterans Tribute Bike since leaving Washington , D.C. and Rolling Thunders Annual Protest Ride for Accountability was heart warming and in direct contrast to the disrespect dealt out by Rolling Thunders Security personal in the Pentagon Parking Lot.

From Washington , D.C. to Fort Benning , G.A. to North Myrtle Beach, S.C. to Brooksville , Florida motorcyclists who spotted us on the road pulled front and rear to give us a motorcycle escort for as long as their journey led them. Others along the way would take their place and kept the escort going. Riders from Patriot Guard , Vietnam Vets M.C., Nam Knights, Leather Necks M.C. , Combat Vets, non-vet riders, Rolling Thunder Riders and others jointed in the escort on different legs of journey. It was a sight to see. A mini ride of Tribute and honor to the motorcycle that pays tribute to them and honors all who served.

The 173rd. Airborne Brigade Reunion in North Myrtle Beach, Florida was my first Brigade Reunion and like the 173rd. Airborne Monument Dedication at Ft. Benning , G.A. it was once again the biggest gathering of “ Sky Soldiers” I had experienced since leaving the unit in 1965. We are band of brothers with intense pride in our unit and its accomplishments on the battlefield. We were part of those accomplishments. We were the army’s elite strike force and the 173rd. is still the Army’s elite strike force now deployed in Afghanistan.

REMEMBER THEM
If you are able, save for them a place inside of you and one backward glance when you are leaving, for the places they can no longer go.

Be not ashamed to say you loved them, though you may or may not always have. Take what they have left and what they have taught you with their dying and keep it with your own.
And in that time when men decide and feel safe to call the war insane, take one moment to embrace those gentle heroes you left behind.
